Candlewood Comments

The Candlewood Comment was a seasonal
magazine published in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was billed as "A
Monthly Digest of Lake News". In each issue there was a section on
Candlewood Knolls. They will be reproduced here periodically. |

June 1939 Vol. 3, No. 1
Candlewood Knolls
Building activity in the Homeland communities at Candlewood Lake is
increasing rapidly with more favorable weather conditions. A particular
important trend in these colonies is that toward year-round homes.
At Candlewood Knolls, on Ridge Road, a home for all year occupancy is
being built for Mr. and Mrs. Alton Blaine. Mr. Blaine is with Swift &
Co., and is the son of Anthony F. Blaine of Lake St., Danbury. The
Blaine's will have a studio-type log lodge with several alternating
floor levels.

| At the tip of the Crestway in the Knolls,
Mr. and Mrs. William Bolan of New York are having a Swiss-type cabin
built by contractor Charles Minck of Danbury. This is the second place
that the Bolans have acquired at the Knolls. Mr. Bolan is a musical
composer by profession. Ground has also just been broken for an
attractive cottage on Lakeview Drive in the colonial section for Mr. and
Mrs. Theodore Ahlgrim of Danbury, who are popularly known in local
circles. Charles Minck is also the contractor on this place. In
addition to these, a contract is about to be awarded for the vacation
cabin of Mr. and Mrs. John Major of Brooklyn, N. Y., on Ridge Road. Mr.
Major is with the Department of Building in New York City.
Several alteration jobs are under way including a two-room and garage
extension for Edward Duggan's place, a large porch addition to the
Wallace Odell cabin and a two-room addition at the Mullaly cabin, "Snug
Haven".
Plans for further new construction are now in progress in architects'
hands for Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Pardee of New York City, and Mr. and
Mrs. John J. Noble of Leonia, N. J. |
