| The team of the Carmel County Club is
scheduled to swim at the Knolls on August 20th and on August 27th, the
New Milford Swimming Club will appear and the competitive season closes
on September 2nd, when the Pleasantville, N. Y. Aquatic Club will be the
visiting team. The Knolls' softball team during August captured the
honors in all of its games, winning from Candlewood Isle twice, and the
New Fairfield Department twice also.
Four leaf clover is enjoying considerable popularity in the colony at
present. Unusual collections have recently been made. One lady, Mrs.
Esther Silliman, in a month's time accumulated over a hundred including
many with five leaves and several with six.
The Ladies' Committee conducted a lawn supper on August 4th at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. George Gumbs. A corps of eight chefs and serving
aids catered to the hearty appetites of about one hundred and fifty
Knolls' colonists.
Preparations for the Labor Day Mardi Gras have been completed and a
most fitting high point in the season's activities is assured.
Mr. and Mrs. William Einsel of Yonkers, N. Y. have purchased a water
front piece of plottage and will build their vacation home at once.
Plans have already been prepared by William P. Cain, Associate Architect
of the Homeland Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sears also of Yonkers and who, with their two
daughters, Barbara and Sylvia, have been summering at the O'Hara
cottage, have selected a large and attractive site for their summer home
but probably will not build until next year. The Sears also have a place
at Northport, L. I., but have succumbed to Candlewood's charms as
against the seashore.
Mrs. Bertha M. Lee and family of Danbury have also purchased a
waterfront plot in the cottage section near North Beach and will build
in the spring.
The Exhibit Cottage on Lake Drive has been purchased by Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Hallenbeck of New York City and their housewarming will be held
in early September.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Ingram of New York City have bought a wooded site
on The Overlook in the log lodge section and plan to be resident
Homelanders next season.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bodnar of Jackson Heights are planning a very
unique log structure in which many innovations are promised for the plot
they have just purchased on The Crest Way. Mr. Bodnar, who gives much of
his time to design and architecture is an engineer of some note.
The new outdoor grill at the Club House has been completed and will
be tried out for a corn roast and clam supper very soon.
The fall schedule of Club events is now being formulated with the
Barn Dance, Community Supper during the Danbury Fair Week, and the
Hallowe'en party as major features. It is contemplated that this year
the winter schedule will be a very complete one also, there being more
demand for winter sports activities each season. |
