Candlewood Comments

The Candlewood Comment was a seasonal magazine published in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was billed as "A Monthly Digest of Lake News". In each issue there was a section on Candlewood Knolls. They will be reproduced here periodically.

Candlewood Knolls

The July 4th water sports program brought new talent for the Knolls swimming team. Some of last season's stars were in evidence: among them, Marie Nelson, Eleanor Shetlein, Betty Mullally, Del Davis, George Minervini, and Buddy Burns.

On July 9th the first of the Bridge parties conducted by the Ladies' auxiliary of the Knolls Association was held with ten tables filled. The hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. George Gubms, Mrs. Wallace Odell and Mrs. Peter Webber.

Mr. and Mrs. John C. Bolte of Mt. Vernon have been at the Waterman Cottage for July, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Steinmetz of Peekskill have been guests at the Kenny lodge for the same period.

Mrs. William Hoerle and family of Ridgefield have been vacationing at the Strickler place on Lake Drive, and Mrs. Florence Wheelock of Stamford has been occupying the Prior cabin. Mr. Paul E. Courtois and family have the Thomas Reardon cottage for the season.

Mrs. Katherine Burnell of New York City has purchased a large log cabin site on Lake Drive and is planning to build a summer home next season.

Miss Regina Burke, Superintendent of Schools has added a further sixty foot plot to her holdings on Crest Way which adjoins those of her brother, Chief Harold Burke of the New York City Fire Department.

Mr. and Mrs. John W. Major of White Plains, N. Y., have purchased additional plottage for the setting of their new log lodge.

Mr. and Mrs. James Garcia of Astoria, have purchased a double plot on Lake Drive and are planning to build this fall.

On the 10th, the Softball team from Candlewood Isle visited the Knolls. The score: 17 to 2 in the Knolls' favor. Ray Smith, Jr. pitched for the isle, and Bob Clifford for the Knolls. It was a little early in the season to judge of the abilities of the two teams. The Isle will undoubtedly turn the tables on their home field.

The Candlewood Knolls players presented two dramatic sketches on the evening of July 16th to an audience of over 300 enthusiastic supporters. The "Farmer's Daughter," with extraordinary natural scenic effects and excellent talent, was continuously applauded. Leading parts were taken by the Misses Marjorie Vanderbilt, Marjorie Ashmead, Marian Witt and Mrs. John O'Connell and the Messrs. Bill Crum, John O'Connell and N. LaFar.

The scream of the evening was the old stand-by: "Curse You Jack Dalton," in which all the female parts were played by men-folks, including M. Sullivan, G. Liebler, W. Stripling, G. Jardynzski, L. Liebler, A. Witt and Tom Riordon.
