Candlewood Comments

The Candlewood Comment was a seasonal magazine published in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was billed as "A Monthly Digest of Lake News". In each issue there was a section on Candlewood Knolls. They will be reproduced here periodically.

Candlewood Knolls

It may be a sane Fourth in certain localities where the village fathers have ordered the younger generation to be good, even if they can't be happy, but at Candlewood Knolls the celebration of that great event in history will start with a dance on Saturday night, to be followed by sports on Sunday and Monday when a softball baseball game will be held between the married men and single men.

A novel event was held on Saturday night, June 18, when "Bill" Crum chairman of the entertainment committee put on a steeplechase. It consisted of ten games of skill from throwing darts to seeing who was the greatest blower by dimming five lighted candles set in a row while the blower tested his lungs through an opening between two boards. Don Vanderbilt was responsible for the games and his work displayed much skill. Miss Marjorie Vanderbilt and Thomas Timmons were the prize winners.

Mrs. George Gumb, chairman of the women's committee at the Knolls, has announced four bridge parties for July, the first to be known as a geranium party will be held on July 7. Mrs. Wallace Odell and Mrs. Peter Weber will assist Mrs. Gumb. Other dates are July 14, 21  and 28.

On July 13, the ladies from the Knolls traveled to Old Hundred at Southbury for luncheon and bridge and on July 27 they will enjoy another party  at Rainbow Inn, Poundridge.

Broadway is going to be brought to the Knolls in August. Bill Crum is planning to put on two old time melodramas of the ten-twenty-thirty style, so popular in the Gay Nineties. One, "Curse you Dan Dalton," will be put on by a "troupe" of young people and rehearsals are already under way. The other, "The Farmer's Daughter," will be in the hands of an all male cast. Thomas Reardon, well known Danburyite, will be in the star role and how he wins the affections of the farmer's daughters will pack the house.

Later in the month Mr. Crum will put on the annual amateur show. He feels sure that both "attractions" will play to packed houses. Last year standing room only signs were out early.

The gym classes under Mrs. Henry Rocano which proved so popular last year, will be started on July 12 at the clubhosue. These classes are largely attended. They are held every Tuesday morning and the women have a lot of fun playing games, dancing and doing gymnastics.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sears, of Yonkers, who generally summer on Long Island, have forsaken the salt water and are spending the summer at the Knolls. The beautiful lake has made a big hit with them.

The Knolls is planning far ahead: The entertainment committees under Mr. Crum and Mrs. Gumb are now talking of huge Mardi Gras for the Labor Day holiday with the crowning of the King and Queen on the Saturday night before the holiday to be followed with a program of sports on Sunday and Monday.

The Farmhouse is getting very popular and week-end guests are taking all accommodations. Several guests are staying for July.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brogan of Yonkers, are now occupying their cabin and they have one of the most beautiful cabins and grounds on the lake.

Mrs. Charles Mullally, who recently suffered a serious accident, is spending part of June recuperating at the lake. Her daughter Jean is with her.

Bob Clifford, counselor at the Knolls, is expected to report for duty the latter part of the month. Charles Mullally, chairman of the marine and water sports committee, is planning some big events this year.

Miss Evelyn Shevlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Shevlin was married to Mr. Frank J. Harden on June 18, in New York City. Mr. and Mrs. Harden are now enjoying a trip to the West Indies.

New faces at the Knolls this season will be Mr. and Mrs. Russell J. Hogan of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jones of Stamford, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. John W. Major of Danbury, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Humbert of Yonkers, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. James Garcia of Peekskill, N.Y., Dr. and Mrs. R. Kirk of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Gerald of Bronx, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Ley of Long Island City, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. John J. Sales of Yonkers, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hodson of Flushing, L. I., Mr. and Mrs. James Slavin of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hudson of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Roberts of Yonkers, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grimm of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Matz of Yonkers, N.Y., Mr. Geo. F. Schmidt of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Vautrot of Bronx, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Kelleher of Irvington, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Cornell of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Neil of Flushing, L.I., N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Chas. M. Schirp of New York City, and Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Meredith of Kew Gardens, L. I., N. Y.

With the oiling of all the roads at the Knolls during the latter part of May and the widening of several, Candlewood Knolls motor traffic is served better than most metropolitan suburban neighborhoods.

The new Club floats for the swimming meets are nearing completion and will be in readiness for the first activities of the season.

The Club fleet of Sail and Motor Boats has nearly trebled this season and a schedule of Club Regattas is being prepared.
