Candlewood Comments

The Candlewood Comment was a seasonal magazine published in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was billed as "A Monthly Digest of Lake News". In each issue there was a section on Candlewood Knolls. They will be reproduced here periodically.

Candlewood Knolls

Now that the season has officially opened, it is noted that there are quite a few new faces among this steadily growing group of colonists. Some have bought cabins, others are renting for the summer.

Among those who have bought are Mrs. Helen C. Daragan of Danbury who recently purchased the Slayden cottage. It is being done over inside and out and will soon be ready to receive its new occupants.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Sullivan of Yonkers have bought the Heuer cottage. They are building a new garage and are adding other improvements which will place their cottage up among the leaders at the Knolls in comfort and beauty. On the recommendation of the Sullivans, their friends, Mr. and Mrs. George Hoover of Yonkers, have purchased on of the new Colonial cottages on old town road with an exceptional view of the lake.

Harold Jenks' waterfront cottage has been purchased by Mildred A. Gibson of New York City. This place has long been known to residents as the one having the stone lighthouse on the large boulder near the water's edge.

Cabins have been in great demand and following are some who will spend the summer at the Knolls in places they have taken for the season: Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Berry of Rye, Mrs. M. B. Reiser and Mrs. J. F. Lee of New York City, Elsa Ebling of Brookline, Mass., R. N. Harder, Thos. A. Brogan and George Muller of Yonkers, Russell Hogan of Stamford, Henry Suchre of New York City and Frederick A. Zender of Jamaica, L.I.

The Fourth of July holiday will be observed in a big way at the Knolls. On Saturday night, July 3, a big dance will be held and on Sunday there will be water sports. On Monday baseball will be the attraction.

Miss Virginia Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright Brown, of Yonkers, was the weekend guest on June 12th of Miss Marjorie Vanderbilt.

The new shuffle board courts at the clubhouse have proved to be the most popular game ever inaugurated at the Knolls. Every night crowds of members are there enjoying the game. Another innovation at the Clubhouse is a Wurtzlinger music box. After the games many stay to dance.

Fred Weber, of Pelham, who has a fine home at the Knolls, believes in enjoying all the comforts of home while sailing. Fred lies off in an easy chair with pillows at his back and his feet in the air. His wife and daughter Jean generally ship with him.

The New Fairfield Congregational Church will hold its daily Vacation Church School for two weeks beginning July 12th. Several members of the Knolls took advantage of this last year.

Mrs. Wallace Odell entertained the members of the Ladies Aid Society of Asbury M.E. Church of Tarrytown at her cabin on the lake front on Tuesday, June 8. Nearly 35 attended and they had a wonderful day. Boat rides at the Clubhouse followed a business session.

The ball field has been put into excellent condition. Nearly fifty loads of fill have been placed in the outfield and a new backstop has been built. The club hopes to have a good soft ball team this summer and will play games with other team around the lake. The first big ball game will be played on Monday morning, July 5, when the single men tackle the married men.

One of the most attractive places at the Knolls is that of Frank Vanderbilt, of Yonkers. Mr. Vanderbilt who is a Trust officer in the Fifth Avenue Bank has a corner plot and it looks like a rose garden. He and his family are fond of flowers and they are working on the grounds all the time.
