Candlewood Comments

The Candlewood Comment was a seasonal magazine published in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It was billed as "A Monthly Digest of Lake News". In each issue there was a section on Candlewood Knolls. They will be reproduced here periodically.

Candlewood Knolls

Candlewood Knolls is ready to go places. Never has a season opened with greater enthusiasm. Owners could hardly wait for the water to be turned on in their cabins and homes so they could start weekending at this popular lake colony. Every Saturday and Sunday residents are busy cleaning house and "getting to rights." Outside on the grounds and in the flower beds the same activity is visible. Owners at the Knolls take great pride in their homes and their grounds.

The season at the Knolls will officially open on Saturday night May 29 when a supper and Bingo Party will be held. These suppers are very popular and it is hoped to hold four or five of them during the season.

Sports are going to be popular. Two shuffle board courts have been laid out in the clubhouse and two new ping pong tables have been installed. With these attractions, the clubhouse promises to be more popular than ever. It is hoped to have tournaments for women and men, with finals being played later in the season

A new backstop has been erected on the ball field and the prospects are that the Knolls will have a good baseball team in the field. Games with teams from other developments around the lake are anticipated.

"Bob" Clifford, who is well known at the Knolls and also in Danbury, has been engaged as counsellor this year and will begin his activities around the middle of June. Clifford is an all around athlete and is popular with the boys and girls at the Knoll.

The beaches have been put in fine condition. Walls were built this winter to protect them and they have been filled in with new sand and should be most attractive.

Horse shoe pitching is going to be one of the popular games. Two courts are to be laid out on each beach and it is hoped that some of the more export will compete in tournaments during August.

The tennis court has been put in play. This is always in demand and will be more so than ever this year.

Other plans for the enjoyment of the Knoll's residents include moving picture shows weekly. It is expected that these will be given on Tuesday nights. On Thursday nights cards will be enjoyed and will be in charge of different hostesses each week.

Demand for cabins and homes at the Knolls has been especially active. Already most of the places available have been rented for the season. The demand is certain to far exceed the supply.

One of the big attractions at the Knolls is the Farm House and Country Store. The former apartment house has been transformed and a dining room has been built on the lake side, the view from which is much enjoyed.

The one thing the Knolls boasts of is that it has the only soda fountain this side of Danbury. It has been installed in the Farm House and a large porch has been erected on the south east corner where residents can come to enjoy their ice cream and sodas under the silvery moon.

One of the most attractive places at the Knolls is promised by Edward Duggin. He has plowed and seeded his lawn on his lakefront property and has also planted several trees and numerous shrubs. Mr. Duggin is an official of the General Motors Co.

Miss Frances Marlat, who owns an attractive house on the lake, was recently elected a member of the Board of Education in Mt. Vernon. There were seven candidates for the office and Miss Marlat polled the highest number of votes.

Charles "Skipper" Mullally, head of the Homeland Co. was amoung the first to shove his Chris Craft overboard. Next to real estate, boating is his hobby.

William Barlow, electrical contractor from Yonkers, who owns a cabin up on the hill next to Fire Chief Burke of New York City, is a Knolls enthusiast. Although blind, Mr. Barlow can describe all the beauties of the lake and one of his favorite sports is fishing.

Wilson Crum of Yonkers is in charge of the entertainment committee and he promises a big season. "Bill" (that's what his friends call him) says he is going to make square dances popular, and as for Dan Tuckers they will be plentiful. Best way in the world, he says, to get everybody acquainted and to give them a good time.
